Evidence is back and ready ‘Weather or Not’

THIS IS HIP-HOP AT IT’S FINEST

Evidence has been in the rap game since the ‘90s when he helped form the Los Angeles rap group, Dilated Peoples, with DJ Babu and Rakaa Iriscience.

His debut album, The Weatherman (2007), received critical acclaim for its production, which he oversaw with co-executive producer The Alchemist.

It was set out to be much different from his work with Dilated Peoples and it was. In 2009, he signed a deal with Minneapolis based independent hip-hop label, Rhymesayers Entertainment, after which he went on to release Cats & Dogs (2011). His sophomore album would receive even more attention than his first, charting at No. 64 on the Billboard 200 charts.

LOOKS LIKE RAIN

Now, seven long years since, Evidence has returned with his highly anticipated third studio album, Weather or Not.

The album is arguably his best work yet. Naturally, it features such long-time companions as Rakaa, DJ Babu, and The Alchemist. But it also extends even further, mixing in an ensemble of all-star and emerging rappers and producers such as Rapsody, Styles P (of The L.O.X.) Slug (of Atmosphere), Jonwayne, DJ Premier, Nottz, Catero, Krondon, Defari, Mach-Hommy, Khrysis, Budgie Beats, AmirSaysNothing, Samiyam, and Twiz The Beat Pro.

Some noteworthy tracks include the posse cut, “Love is a Funny Thing,” followed by the ever-masterful scratching sounds of Primo on the track “10,000 hours.”

Weather or Not is witty, comical, emotional and triumphant. Naturally, it’s not without cliché topics like drugs and crime, but it also touches on matters of love, life, and overcoming obstacles. It will make you laugh with the title track, a joke on fans and critics who say “he makes too many weather references.” It may even make you cry, with the heartfelt finalé, “By My Side Too,” about his girlfriend’s battle with cancer.

RATING: 5 / 5
